Celebrating the Movement to End Prisoner Rape

This year marks JDI’s 40th anniversary. To honor this milestone, we asked people and organizations who have been part of our movement to share what our works means to them.

“Sexual abuse in detention is oppression and it is tragic but above all it is unnecessary — and this is where JDI comes in. I wrote to them while I was locked up and when I got a letter back from them, it was like ‘whoa somebody cares, I am not alone.’ Now that I’m out, I see the important work JDI does from this side of the wall — and the word ‘amazing’ is not enough.” — Rodney Roussell, JDI Survivor Council

“Happy anniversary to this tremendous organization. JDI has been a source of strength in my healing process. I’m proud to have joined JDI in helping survivors find their voice and break the walls of silence.” — Stephanie Walker, JDI Board of Directors and Survivor Council

“JDI is truly in a league of its own, and has been for 40 years. I’ll never forget how they stood by me when I needed them. What an honor it is be part of this movement of people fighting for what’s right.” — Troy Isaac, JDI Survivor Council

“When I was sexually abused in detention, JDI was there for me. They helped me get counseling behind bars. Being able to speak confidentially about what happened was the greatest feeling in the world.” — Nicole Wolfe, JDI Survivor Council

“JDI believed in me when no one else would. Their support gave me the courage to speak out, to keep fighting for my rights and to stand up for the rights of others. Happy 40th, JDI!” — Frank Mendoza, JDI Survivor Council

“JDI always, told me ‘You are not alone.’ And it’s true, JDI has always been there for me. In the most complicated times in my life, it was those simple words.” — Johana Hudnall, JDI Survivor Council

“Cheers to your 40th Anniversary, JDI! To think of the hope you’ve inspired, the change you’ve helped to build, and the lives you’ve touched is humbling and inspiring. NYSCASA is proud of our partnerships with JDI in various forms over the years; from visioning and imagining possibilities to seeing focus groups succeed and grow a life of their own, and we look forward to furthering the work and connecting in whatever comes next. Many thanks, and deep appreciation to you all!” — New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault

“Happy anniversary, JDI! The Resource Sharing Project, state/territory coalitions, and advocacy programs across the country are fortunate to have you as a partner in the movement to end sexual violence. Advocacy programs in rural communities are better equipped to serve survivors in detention because of your strong voice and unshakeable commitment.” — Resource Sharing Project

“Happy anniversary to one of the most crucial organizations! JDI beats the drum with an unwavering and steady beat, calling on others to unite against one of the most egregious and prevalent abuses of power — sexual abuse in confinement. Incarcerated individuals deserve to be free of fear of sexual assault or sexual harassment. As it is also domestic violence awareness month, let us consider that isolation propels and intensifies abuse. For incarcerated survivors, this is no different; they live in the confines of prisons that have been reinforced by additional walls, such as isolation, economic control, emotional abuse, and even sexual violence. Ending abuse for survivors requires the termination of cavalier attitudes that pulsate throughout our culture surrounding prison rape and harassment. From offering comprehensive trainings, to providing as needed technical support, to collaborating onprojects, JDI offers a multitude of resources for sexual assault advocates, but they also host a well of support for concerned individuals and incarcerated survivors.” — Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault

“Happy 40th Anniversary JDI and we look forward in continuing our relationship and the work to end sexual violence in detention centers. Congrats!” — Melanie Barton, PREA Advocate Coordinator, Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault

“The Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault appreciates JDI’s support as we strive to form victim-centered partnerships with correctional facilities. Happy Anniversary!” — Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault

“On behalf of NMCSAP I would like to congratulate JDI on their 40th anniversary and thank them for all support and training over the years to ensure that incarcerated survivors receive the services they deserve.” — Carla Gallegos-Ortega, Project Manager and PREA Coordinator, New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, Inc.

“Just Detention has always been a true collaborative partner. They have helped PCAR to continue to move our mission of ending sexual violence and advocating for the rights and needs of all victims of sexual harassment, abuse and assault forward. Congratulations on your 40th anniversary!” — Joyce Lukima, Chief Operating Officer, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape
