JDI was founded in 1980 by a prisoner rape survivor named Russell Dan Smith. Smith served as Executive Director, and his friend and fellow advocate Barry Mehler served as Secretary. The group was known as People Organized to Stop the Rape of Imprisoned Persons, or POSRIP.
