- Toni Morrison and Junot Diaz had a conversation last night at the New York Public Library about race and writing. You can watch a video of the entire event, in which they discuss Toni’s work as an editor and writing about female friendship, among other things. [Colorlines]
- On Wednesday, the Michigan legislature passed a bill that bans private insurance plans from covering abortions. Women can buy extra coverage for unplanned pregnancies that many are calling “rape insurance”, but Jessica Valenti argues that this phrase creates a hierarchy of good and bad abortions that limits reproductive justice for all women. - The Supreme Court in India has set aside their ruling from 2009 which decriminalized homosexual sex, withdrawing legal protections for their LGBTQ community. [The Indian Express]
- Twitter changed its policies yesterday to make it so blocking people who harass you on Twitter now just mutes them — but after a wave of complaints, Twitter quickly nixed the change. [Forbes, DNA]
- Queers for Economic Justice, a progressive non-profit organization that has been dedicated to addressing poverty and inequality through a lens of sexual and gender liberation, has announced that they will be closing due to lack of funds, and they urge their supporters to continue the fight for justice. - In light of the failures of Eve Ensler and the 1 Billion Rising campaign to effectively address gender violence in a respectful and inclusive way, one author suggests some principles to guide an attempt to answer the question, “What would a justice-based movement to end gender violence look like?” [Andrea366]
- The members of Pussy Riot could be freed before the end of the year, now that the Russian Supreme Court has ordered an appeal hearing and ruled that the initial proceedings were conducted illegally. [Ms. Magazine]
- California is one of the first states to enact legislation against revenge porn, and now a San Diego man has been arrested for running a revenge porn website, evidence that governments are beginning to take action on this issue. [Slate]
- Just Detention International, an organization that seeks to end sexual abuse of prisoners, has organized a campaign to gather messages of hope and encouragement for survivors of sexual abuse in detainment this holiday season. This is a project that Bitch Media has supported and promoted for the past several years, and we are asking again for readers to send messages of support to people who rarely receive any.
