The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) provides free, confidential support and services to survivors of sexual violence ages 12 and up and their families and friends. We work with survivors of all genders from the immediate crisis after sexual violence to years and decades later, and our goal is to empower survivors to heal and seek justice in ways that are meaningful to them. We provide a range of services including: 24-hour hotline (12-hours for survivors in custody); 24-hour accompaniment to the hospital emergency department; individual, couple, family, and group counseling; legal assistance; and assistance with post-assault issues, such as housing, finances, immigration, employment, education, and more.

We assist survivors as they navigate the health-care, criminal justice, social service, and school systems. We also work with a wide range of organizations and communities, including high schools, colleges, police, health- care providers, and businesses, to advocate for change. We provide training in how to respond to survivors and create cultures that prevent sexual violence in the first place. Our response and prevention programs are based on research and more than 45 years of direct service experience. We are frequently asked to provide expert testimony about potential policy and legislative solutions to preventing and responding to sexual violence. We also provide expert commentary in the media on these issues. We are powered by a staff of roughly 50 people and more than 250 volunteers from our communities.

Service area: BARCC serves 29 cities and towns in the Greater Boston Area: Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Burlington, Cambridge, Chelsea, Concord, Everett, Lexington, Lincoln, Malden, Medford, Melrose, Needham, Newton, Reading, Revere, Somerville, Stoneham, Wakefield, Waltham, Watertown, Wellesley, Weston, Winchester, Winthrop and Woburn. BARCC works with three correctional agencies—the Massachusetts Department of Correction, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, and the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office—to provide support in 19 facilities throughout the state.

Facilities served are: Boston Pre-Release Center, Bridgewater State Hospital, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Correctional Unit, Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center, Massachusetts Treatment Center, MCI Cedar Junction, MCI Concord, MCI Framingham, MCI Norfolk, MCI Shirley, North Central Correctional Institution, Northeastern Correctional Center, Old Colony Correctional Center, Pondville Correctional Center, South Middlesex Correctional Center, Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, Nashua Street Jail, South Bay Correctional Center, Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Center.

Work with: All survivors of sexual assault ages 12 and over and their families, friends and communities.

Services for survivors during incarceration include: Our dedicated incarcerated survivor support program hotline is available from 9 a.m.–9 p.m. every day in the facilities that we serve. We also provide hospital accompaniment during forensic exams. We also run a mail program that provides mailed resources for survivors in custody, and offer advocates for investigational interviews. BARCC runs PREA education orientations in the MA DOC and Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office facilities. For family members and friends of incarcerated survivors who are looking for support themselves, our general rape crisis hotline is available 24/7 and web chat support is available from 9 a.m.–11 p.m.

Services for survivors after release include: All BARCC services are available to survivors of sexual violence after release. Note that outside of our services for currently incarcerated survivors BARCC does not work with anyone who has a history of perpetrating domestic or sexual violence and would instead refer those folks to other agencies for support.

Services for loved ones include: All BARCC services are available for people in the lives of survivors.

Fees: BARCC services are free.

Additional Information: Each year, BARCC assists thousands of sexual violence survivors— regardless of sex, gender identity, race, physical/developmental disabilities, income, ethnicity, class, religion, sexual orientation, and former/current engagement with sex work—and their families, friends and communities. We provide services in English and Spanish, as well as other languages upon request. BARCC’s incarcerated survivor support program hotline (available to currently incarcerated survivors in the 19 facilities served) is available regardless of history of perpetrating violence (including sex offenders), however BARCC’s client services (available after release) do not serve survivors or significant others with a history of perpetrating domestic or sexual violence.
