How Did They Do That?! Building Effective, PREA-Compliant Victim Services Programs in Custody Settings

Are you a corrections official or victim advocate looking to create a program that delivers quality rape crisis services to prisoners, or a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding administrator seeking to ensure access to such services? This one-day interactive workshop — organized by Just Detention International (JDI) and held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 19, 2018 — will provide the answers and resources you need to reach this underserved population. The workshop is also an opportunity to learn from and strategize with agencies and advocates that have developed successful victim services programs.

Just Detention International is presenting a full-day workshop on delivering victim services for incarcerated survivors. The workshop will offer guidance on creating effective and Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)-compliant victim services programs for incarcerated survivors. The all-day event will be held on Tuesday, June 19, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Philadelphia Center City. Click here to reserve your hotel room at the group rate.

The workshop will provide space for advocates, corrections officials, and VOCA funding administrators to learn about one another’s roles in responding to sexual abuse in detention. Attendees will hear directly from corrections officials, state coalition representatives, and victim advocates who have collaborated successfully to deliver services to incarcerated survivors. The session will feature dynamic group exercises, and there will be ample opportunity to discuss common challenges, gain familiarity with helpful resources, and pose questions to the speakers and other participants.

This workshop, which is made possible through funding from the Office on Victims of Crime, is free to attend (though travel costs are not covered). Anyone is welcome to register for the event, but it is geared toward corrections officials; state sexual assault and domestic violence coalition representatives; rape crisis and other advocates; and VOCA administrators, particularly those based in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

JDI is a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring an end to sexual abuse in all forms of detention. One of our core goals is to ensure that incarcerated survivors get the help that they need and deserve.

How Did They Do That?! is part of a series of JDI workshops on helping incarcerated survivors being held in cities around the country.
