In “Understanding the Issue: An Overview of Sexual Abuse in Prison,” advocates will gain a better understanding of the crisis of sexual violence in prison — and learn how they can help inmates who have survived this abuse. The session provides a summary of the new opportunities for expanding services behind bars resulting from the recently issued Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) national standards.
The webinar provides an overview of sexual abuse in detention that addresses the prevalence of this violence, including the high rates of staff abuse; the factors that contribute to prisoner rape; and its long-term, often devastating impact on the lives of survivors. The webinar also features conversations with two members of JDI’s Survivor Council to provide first-hand accounts of their experiences of sexual abuse in prison.
