This webinar will look at strategies for helping one of the most vulnerable groups in detention: people who identify as LGBTI. Featuring an LGBTI survivor of sexual abuse in detention, the webinar will cover high incidence of prior trauma among LGBTI prisoners and barriers they face in accessing LGBTI-sensitive support services. The presenters will highlight the ways that advocates can use the Prison Rape Elimination Act standards as a tool to ensure the safety and dignity of LGBTI prisoners. The presenters will help advocates evaluate their program’s readiness to serve incarcerated LGBTI survivors and identify additional training needs — with a special focus on working with transgender clients. This is the second in a six-part series of webinars on providing services for especially vulnerable and underserved incarcerated populations, including male survivors of color, Deaf and hard of hearing survivors, survivors with disabilities, survivors of sexual abuse perpetrated by women, and survivors with mental illness.
